Welcome to Mrs Muller's Year 5 class.
Welcome to Year 5, 2009.
I know this is going to be an exciting year.
COMMUNICATION
In order for us to work cooperatively towards your child’s education, it is important that we maintain a line of communication between home and school. I will keep you informed of your child’s progress throughout the year. This may involve sending notes home, telephone conversations or individual meetings. Parent-teacher interviews will be conducted at the end of Terms 1 and 3. Reports will be sent home towards the end of each semester. Please feel free to organise a meeting with me if you wish to discuss your child’s achievements or difficulties, or to inform me of matters that may affect your child’s learning. It’s important that we develop a good parent – teacher relationship, so please try to contact me with your concerns before approaching the office. I am available most afternoons, but please call first so I can ensure we have sufficient time to address your concerns.
HOMEWORK
Homework Sheets: These will go home on Mondays and must be handed in on Fridays.
Spelling: There will be a list of words to be learned each week.
Number Facts: It is important that students practise number facts regularly.
Reading: Each student is expected to read for 10-15 minutes every night.
Finishing Work: From time to time students will be expected to finish any incomplete class work.
CLASS TIMETABLE
The students will be completing a class timetable and gluing it into their books. Please be aware that changes to this timetable may occur.
BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT
The school rules are:
· Respect learning
· Respect others
· Respect self
· Respect property
We will be following the Level System as outlined in the school’s ‘Responsible Behaviour Plan’.
Our class rules are:
· Follow directions
· Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself
· Be in the right place at the right time
· Raise your hand to speak
· Keep yourself and others safe
· Treat each other with respect
· Work quietly
This term, the students will have a sticker chart. Stickers will be given for following class and school rules. When students have completed their charts, they may select an item from the Thank-you Box. They will then bring their chart home to share their achievements with you.
UNIT TOPICS
Our first two weeks will be spent getting to know each other and developing a sense of respect for each student’s individuality. The students will be required to complete an assignment on themselves which they will present to the class.
We will then be completing an indigenous unit called “Myths, Legends, Lives” in which we will be looking at Aboriginal stories and storytelling, as well as traditional and contemporary Aboriginal culture. This unit will include a full day excursion to Stradbroke Island where we will meet our indigenous hosts for a guided walk, cultural demonstrations and boomerang throwing. We will then indulge in a refreshing swim at Brown Lake before boarding the barge for our return trip.
SMART MOVES
We will begin most days with half an hour of physical activity. The Year 4-7 classes will rotate through a variety of games and activities provided by the class teachers.
Please do not hesitate to contact me to make an appointment to discuss any concerns that may arise during the year.
I look forward to working with you towards your child’s education at Ipswich West State School.
Regards
Mrs Karen Muller
